RENO, Nev. – April 1, 2022 – Republican gubernatorial candidate Joey Gilbert was questioned this week by the Nevada Independent online newspaper, regarding his position on transgender participation in high school sports, as well as the LGBTQ movement. He responded as follows.
“Having been a championship-level athlete in both college and professional sports, I am a strong supporter of the many benefits that can be derived – and the life lessons that can be learned from athletic participation. I encourage this participation by everyone.
Competitive sports at any level – high school or beyond – have always been – to me – rightfully separated into men’s and women’s categories: ‘men’ and ‘women’ being defined by their physiological make-up – and not by their psychological feelings. That has been proven to be the best way to have truly fair competition in almost all sports. I still feel it is the best way.
I respect the rights of any physiological male or female to act/talk/dress like the opposite sex, and/or refer to themselves that way. I also respect the rights of the majority of people – like myself – who don’t believe that someone’s BELIEFS about their physiologically-established gender CHANGES that fact: including the physiological qualities of strength and speed that are the basis of athletic contests.
For this reason, I believe that competitive athletics at ANY level – high school and beyond should continue to stay separated between physiological males and females. That allows both men and women to continue participating at their highest competitive levels in sporting events that our nation has always enjoyed. It doesn’t prevent individuals who identify themselves as transgender from continuing to act like whoever they want to be. It lets them still be full athletic participants with those who are physiological equals to themselves.
Regarding the LGBTQ movement, I do NOT see a connection between them and the question of transgender participation in high school sports. I consider the LGBTQ group to be political lobbyists who advocate NOT primarily for the basic civil rights and Constitutional protection of homosexuals – which I support – but as a group who promotes their own personal, political agenda.
This group’s goal is to pressure our society to accept their sense of homosexual values and practices as normal. School curriculum promoted by LGBTQ encourages sexual promiscuity, mocks traditional Judeo/Christian values on sexual activity outside of marriage, and encourages children to not listen to their parents.
LGBTQ promotes the medically unproven belief that homosexuality is a biological fact rather than a psychological choice, and that as such, homosexuals of all kinds deserve the same identification and provisions as racial minorities and/or physically/mentally disabled individuals. I disagree with all of those beliefs and goals. I see the political agenda and goals of the LGBQT+ movement as an issue that is distinctly different from the question of maintaining the separation of biological males and females in high school sports.”
